480 lots will be up for sale during CGB’s Live Auction – 27 September 2016 – from An-

cient coinage to Royal and Modern French coins as well as World coins.

Once again, the selection of ancient coins will account for about one third of the sale,

with a great selection of Greek coins, among which many Seleucid Tetradrachms and an

ensemble of gold coins from the Late Roman and Byzantine Empire.

Among the many Greek coins on offer, you will find a beautiful Syracuse Tetradrachm

signed by Evainète engravers on the obverse and Eumène engravers for the reverse

(Lot 403651). A splendid Amphipolis Stater (Lot 403433) should thrill fans of beauti-

ful style coins. A silver hemistater of Croesus is a reminder that the roots of coins can

be traced back to Lydia, among other places, at the edge of the city of Sardis, on the

banks of the Pactolus River (Lot 403738). A lovely Stater from Tarsus for Satrap Bala-

cros (Lot 403623), the successor of Mazaios, remind us of the conquests of Alexander

the Great. The Tetradrachm of Antiochus Hierax (lot 403385) for Alexandria Troas is

the testimony of the struggle between the latter and his brother, Seleucus II. Finally, a

magnificent electrum Stater of Carthage (Lot 403437) is a vivid illustration of one of the

most beautiful ancient civilizations.

Among the Roman coins, you will discover a beautiful Macrinus bronze coin for the city

of Ephesus (Lot 403529), a very nice Aureus of Alexander Severus bearing “VIRTVS

AVG” on the reverse (Lot 403462), and a rare half-Argenteus of Constantine the Great

for Trier (Lot 402898).

After Rome, we will continue with Byzantium and discover a rare Solidus of Justinian II

bearing Christ's effigy on the observe (Lot 403728) and a splendid Solidus of Leontios,
