Totaling 133 items, French royal coins are fundamental to this sale. The first coin of this series is the very rare Château-Landon obole coin in the name of Philip I (lot 577058). Pieforts were given significant focus with three of them for the reign of Philip VI of Valois, one of the Charles IX douzain (lot 565238), one of the Henry III liard (lot 567570), and three for Louis XIII, i.e . the ¼ franc, the douzain and the 1/12 ecu (lot 578975, lot 565247 and lot 565243). Collectors who are interested in error coins, maybe specializing in the Second Empire, will find a Henri III franc au col plat (with a flat collar) bearing the year 1853 ( sic , 1583) for Bordeaux (lot 583792). Gold coinage is well represented for all periods with for instance a rare Louis XIII double louis d’or avec deux rubans (with two ribbons) minted in 1641 in Paris (lot 582162). 583897 With 56 lots, the part devoted to feudal coins is quite well-stocked. You will note the very rare Simon denier minted in 1264 in Châteaudun (lot 578752) and the double tournois in the name of Guillaume-Henri de Nassau, minted in Orange in 1659 (lot 575975). A collection of Dôle coins complements this set with extremely rare coins, some of which are featured in reference books, such as the Philip II of Spain teston minted in Dôle in 1589. This coin comes from the Crédit Suisse sale of April 20, 1985 and the sale of the Margaine collection of March 25, 2009 (lot 583897) and is the second known specimen. In addition, this sale also features some rare Ardennes coins from Sedan and Charleville and several baudequins which are particularly difficult to find (Alost or Crèvecœur...). Then there are coins from the French modern period (post French Revolution). Several outstanding lots will no doubt draw collectors’ attention with, above all, the catalog cover coin, namely the very rare proof strike of the 5-Franc Louis Napoleon coin ( flan bruni ) (lot 593215, NGC PF63+). It is the first time we are offering this type for sale, just like lot 568300, namely the 10-cent Napoleon tête laurée (laurelled head) 1861 E pattern coin. LIVE AUCTION Closing date, June 16, 2020 7
