including a very beautiful triens credited to monétaire SIGEBERT (lot 517300) and an extremely rare denier of Louis the Pious for Venice, bearing VENECIAS MONETA as a caption (lot 512763). After the Carolingian kings comes the part dedicated to French royal coins featuring a silver écu , 2 nd type, 1 st hallmark of Warin 1642 A (lot 520564) in outstanding condition. This 2 nd type called “ du 1 er poinçon de Warin ” (from the 1 st Warin hallmark) is very rare. It was only minted in Paris in 1641 and 1642. The king’s portrait was modified in the course of 1642 by adding lemnisci and an ancient-style armor to it, which appears from under the drapery, whose shape was also modified. In addition to the traditional gold saluts or agnels , highly sought-after types are also offered for sale: a gold demi-louis “à la mèche longue” (with a long lock of hair) 1647 A (lot 520565), a gold louis with two “L” of Béarn 1722 Pau (lot 412817) or a gold louis “à la tête virile laurée” (with a virile laurelled head), 2 nd portrait (hallmark of Joseph Roëttiers) 1687 Lyon (lot 520598), a particularly sought-after coin whose type was massively remodeled after the December 1689 Edict. This coin’s edge is smooth, which means it was struck before the Castaings’ machines appeared in Lyon to mint coin edges. Two lots of the part dedicated to feudal coins will really catch your eye, i.e. a very rare obole for the seignory of Château-Meillant (lot 517306) as well as a gold royal of Brittany in the name of Charles of Blois (1319-1364) (lot 519439), the husband of Jeanne of Penthièvre, the daughter of Guy, brother of Jean III, the last Duke of Brittany, who died in 1341. He claimed the Duchy for his wife against Simon of Montfort (1341-1345), Jean III’s half-brother (lot 519439). Next are the French modern period coins (post-French Revolution). Several lots stand out: lot 505521, i.e . the pre-series without the word “Essai” of the 1-franc Semeuse (sower), nickel, very wide rim PCGS SP66 (according to the publication Essais Monétaires & Piéforts Français by Michel Taillard and Michel Arnaud, only two copies of this coin were known on the date when their book was printed!), lot 520234, i.e . a gold 20-franc coin Napoléon with a laurelled head, French Empire, 1809 U, PCGS XF45 (only 3,376 copies were minted, and which we are auctioning off for the 3 rd time only) as well as lot 501601, a 50-francs Hercule gold piefort. Out of the 170 and more lots we offer for sale, 37 are PCGS, NGC or GENI-slabbed. The sale follows with a rich selection of foreign gold coins, again with uncommon types, which are rarely offered for sale by CGB, such as lot 501898, 8 escudos with the bust of Bolivar, or the rare Mexican Augustin I Iturbide 8-escudo coin (lot 502154). A very nice and consistent set of British coins, including 5-Pound coins for Victoria (lot 502144), Edward VII (lot 502430), George V or George VI (lots 502416 et 502430) should tempt hobbyist collectors of such coinages.Afew nice coins from the end of the MiddleAges and the 16 th century deserve attention among this meticulous selection, such as the gold noble 7
