The sale starts with a large set of Greek coins (more than 100 lots). Two beautiful Ptolemy II coins, a very nice decadrachm (lot 482434) and an extremely rare gold octadrachm ( mnaieon ), lot 480274, will be the highlights of this first portion of this LiveAuction. Then there is a wide selection of Roman coins. It includes an interesting assortment of aurei , among which a MarcusAurelius’ aureus (lot 481996), just as beautiful as the magnificent Antoninus’ aureus also offered for sale (lot 482137) . Tiberius, Hadrian and even Trajan will also be represented. A sestertius featuring two elegant portraits of Antoninus Pius and MarcusAurelius will also catch your eye. Given today’s global market, some ancient coin lots are presented and certified by NGC. Byzantium will also be in the spotlight in this catalog with a dozen lots, including a Mauritius Tiberius’ solidus (lot 481417) and a histamenon nomisma of short-reigning Emperor Michael IV (lot 481410). Twenty-five Celtic coins complete this ancient coins portion. Anice set of Celtic staters is presented, including several staters of the type “Tayac hoard”. An impressive Suessiones stater à l’oeil (with an eye) (lot 482491) and an interesting and splendid obol au daim (with a deer) (lot 479742) are also part of this portion. The portion of this sale dedicated to the Middle Ages will start with a very high-quality selection of Merovingian coins. Among the dozen triens offered for sale, you will no doubt notice the Gondebaud’s triens (lot 482274) or the rarely-seen Cologne triens à la croix ancrée (with an anchor cross) (lot 477985). With more than 130 lots, the French royal coins portion is yet another important part of this June 5 th Live Auction. You will have the pleasure of discovering great rarities such as a much sought-after Henri VI of Lancaster’s angelot d’or for Saint-Lô (lot 475751), or a “ vertugadin ” (farthingale) écu fromBéarn 1716 Pau (lot 472968). This Louis XV’s écu was overstruck on an écu aux trois couronnes (with three crowns) of Louis XIV for Bordeaux. Then there are the French modern period coins (post French Revolution). Several lots stand out among this selection: lot 459223, a Louis-Philippe 2 francs 1847 K (NGC MS64, a new specimen from the Collection Idéale ), lot 472843, an extremely rare pair of uniface Napoleon III pattern 1 franc 1856A(PCGS-encapsulated), the Napoleon III 1 franc 1860, tête laurée (laurelled head) by Barre (lot 473779, PCGS SP64) or Lindauer’s pattern 10 centimes, with “ Cmes” underlined, made of nickel silver, light-weighed, PCGS SP64 (lot 472836). Other items are also worth mentioning, i.e. a Guiraud 50 francs pre-series, without the word “essai” and with a wide rim (lot 468764, PCGS SP63) and a Napoleon tête nue (bare head) 40 francs gold coin, Revolutionary calendar, year 14A, PCGSMS63!
