LIVE AUCTION Closing date, march 6 2018 563 lots are on offer at the CGB Numismatique Paris Live Auction – 6 March 2018, from ancient coins, French royal and modern coins to world coins, tokens and medals. The sale starts with a large set of Greek coins (more than 100 lots). Two beautiful tetradrachms, one for Syracuse (lot 466617) and one from Entella, close to the Elymian territory (lot 467468) are the first highlights of this March Live Auction. Then there is a wide selection of Roman coins. It includes an interesting assortment of aurei , among which a Marcus Aurelius’ aureus (lot 470266), just as beautiful as the magnificent Sabina’s aureus offered for sale (lot 466687) . A denarius featuring an elegant and nicely struck portrait of Julius Caesar will no doubt catch your eye. As with our last auctions, we have focused on coins with a pedigree (private collection, sales catalog, declared and sometimes published treasure troves, etc.). Byzantium will also be in the spotlight in this catalog with some twenty exceptional lots, including two types of semissis that we’re selling for the very first time: a semissis of (short-reigning) Emperor Philippicus Bardanes (lot 470460) and an Anastasius II semissis (lot 470537) . A dozen Celtic coins complete this ancient coins portion. Two exceptional coins are offered, i.e. a Carnutes’ electrum stater à la joue ornée et à la lyre (lot 469617) and a superb Suessiones’ 1/4 stater au serpent cornu (lot 470123). A small and high-quality selection of Merovingian and Carolingian coins is also being auctioned, with a very nice Triens à la croix ancrée (lot 465217), a rare Carloman II denier (lot 470165) and an interesting Louis le Pieux’s obol (lot 463119). As history unfolds, then comes the French royal coin portion of this sale. The program includes great rarities such as a much sought-after Henri IV gold écu au soleil , 1 st type, 1594 A (lot 471546), a 1643 Louis XIII Louis d’or for Lyon - a very unusual monetary type (lot 468303) - and a Louis XIV écu à la cravate , 1 st type, 1680 Rennes (lot 469349) in exceptional condition for this monetary type. The climax of this chapter is a Louis XV écu aux trois couronnes 1715 Lille (471537). The feudal coins chapter also has a vast selection, with some twenty lots offered for sale. Two of these lots will particularly attract your attention: a Henri d’Albret’s écu d’or (Jeanne de Navarre’s father and Henri IV’s grandfather) for Béarn (lot 464265) and a remarkable baudequin du Dauphiné for Jean II, who was one of the last heirs to the French crown of the Viennois era (lot 471449). Then there are the French modern period coins (post French Revolution). Apart from the traditional 40 Francs or 100 Francs gold, several lots rarely offered for sale stand out from the other coins: lot 469431, a 2 Francs Cent-Jours 1815 A, lot 458412, an extremely rare 5 Francs Barre pattern (PCGS-encapsulated) and especially the Napoléon III 1 Franc pattern of 1866, tête laurée by Barre (lot 471091, NGC-encapsulated PF62), which should break sales records. 5
