560 lots are on offer at the CGB Numismatique Paris Live Auction – 12 December 2017, from ancient coins, French royal and modern coins to world coins, jetons and medals. The sale starts with a very nice set of ancient coins that includes more than 50 Greek coins, among which a beautiful Philip III of Macedon tetradrachm (lot 453323) and an exquisite Perseus tetradrachm (lot 457789). Then there is a fine selection of Roman coins. It includes among other things an interesting assortment of aurei , including a Hadrian aureus (lot 457152) and a rare Cneius Domitius Ahenobarbus denarius from the Robert Couet collection. As with our last auctions, we have focused on coins with a pedigree (private collection, sales catalog, declared and sometimes published treasure troves, etc.). About ten Celtic coins complete this ancient coins portion. Two exceptional coins are offe- red, i.e. a Danube Celts “Bartkranzaverse” type of tetradrachm (lot 458513) and a superb category I Remi stater à l’oeil (with an eye) (lot 458805). A selection of Merovingian and Carolingian coins is also offered, including an extre- mely rare Senlis Triens à la croix ancrée (with an anchor cross) (lot 457456), a pre- viously unseen Pepin the Short denarius (lot 455499) or a splendid denier au portrait (with a portrait) that may be from the reign of Charles the Simple (898-923), of Robert (922-923) or from the early reign of Rudolph (923-936) (lot 456431). With more than 150 lots, the royal coins portion of this auction sale is one of its major parts. It includes extremely rare items such as a John II the Good demi-gros à la cou- ronne (with a crown) (lot 453239), a trial coin of the Louis XIV 1658 A (minted in Paris) 30-denier coin (lot 459362) or the trial coin of the Louis XIV 1657 K (minted in Bordeaux) six blancs coin (30-deniers tournois coin) (lot 459539). The classics such as the gold écu au soleil (with sun), the mouton d'or (golden sheep) coin, or the écus à la cravate (with a necktie) will of course be part of the sale. With no less than 40 lots offered for sale, the feudal coins portion is also rich and exten- sive: a Louis Male écu d'or au Lion (with a lion) for the County of Flanders (lot 457154), a very nice Raymond IV Franc à pied (monarch standing) for the principality of Orange (lot 446595) and a John I plaque for the Duchy of Lorraine, which is missing from most collections (lot 437121). Then there are French modern coins (from the post French Revolution period). Among the 118 lots offered for sale, 29 were certified and graded by PCGS and NGC, including lot 452368, a pre-series without the word “ESSAI” for the one-centime Épi matte proof PCGS SP67, which is hardly ever offered for sale.
