the Caisse d’Escompte du Commerce (lots 4310133 et 4310134) will delight hobbyists. As forerunners of the Banque de France banknotes, these documents are usually parts of old collections and are thus very rarely offered for sale. In over thirty years, we have included no more than a dozen of such notes in our catalogs! Another remarkable document is a set of original pages byAuguste Leroux (lot 4310150) for the publishing of a book which couldn’t be found again, i.e ., the Livre d’Or de la Banque de France . This book is supposed to have been printed in 1909, but no trace of it can be found today. Perhaps these unique archives will bring out some information about it? Fans of 19 th century counterfeit notes will love a series of six notes from the 1870s and 1880s (lots 4310142 to 4310149), while specialists of small numbers, error notes or specimens will find items to complete their albums. Our LiveAuction catalogs always endeavor to feature rare and original notes or documents. This time, we are pleased to offer for sale two beautiful drawings by Clément Serveau for Madagascar (lot 4310371), as well as English instruction sheets for 1958 issuances in Guinea (lots 4310310 and 4310311) and photographs from the 1950s for draft notes for Morocco (lot 4310404) and Vietnam (lot 4310470). Among World notes, you will find a splendid series for Madagascar, two notes for Newfoundland (lots 4310448 and 4310449), an 1866 non-issued note for Mexico (lot 4310409) and a rare 14 th century Chinese note from the Ming dynasty (lot 4310083). Europe did not adopt paper money until the 18 th century, but the Chinese already used banknotes while we were still in the middle of the Hundred Years’ War! For this extra large banknote, the PMG certification is a definite advantage. It ascertains authenticity while bringing protection, which is essential for such a fragile document.
